papaya
when I saw you
laid open to the air
I never asked
who had cut you
or with what instrument
I knew
that you were ready
to let go those glowing
dark seeds
out of your belly
gently, with caution
and when I saw you stranded
on the sand
sweet abalone mouth
away from water
I didn't ask
how your scent
would melt into my fingertips
or how the sound of palm trees
would sigh inside
my breath
laid open to the air
I never asked
who had cut you
or with what instrument
I knew
that you were ready
to let go those glowing
dark seeds
out of your belly
gently, with caution
and when I saw you stranded
on the sand
sweet abalone mouth
away from water
I didn't ask
how your scent
would melt into my fingertips
or how the sound of palm trees
would sigh inside
my breath

Oh my bird, to hold the sound of palm trees in your breath...thats so much force,
and this scent of papaya...i couldn't bear it earlier, but my mother-in-law prepares a dish from raw papaya with coconut base...oh so tasty! and i now make it...and okay with the smell,
haha...now you might wonder if I poetry is my interest or cooking! poetry and cooking goes hand in hand, i think :))
and, with this fine poem on papaya you say that anything on earth could be a poem if the poet is a fine one...and you are, goes without saying :)
love,
devika
PS: So you were enjoying work..I have been missing many days of regular work...was trying hard to catch up..caught in such moods -- I can't work properly when I my mind isn't settled..anyway, the editor is too understanding and considerate :)
Devika--I knew you would find this poem right away--that's why I rushed to post it in the middle of MY night! Thanks for your wonderful comment--
I wish I could taste that delicious dish you make--it sounds like you were born with palm trees in your soul--we northerners must search these things out for ourselves!
(And I hope you find peace of mind--perhaps a check-up would be a good idea--you never know what these imbalanced moods might be a symptom of?)
hmmm my first comment was eaten! :)
check up -- having lived with me for 41 years, I quite know the source of my unrest my dear..but sometimes I let it take over...just as a challenge on to myself..my work gets affected in a different matter :)
palm in my soul -- if you find me so, it could be something to do with my genetics and then the place I belong...You should come to Kerala...there, I'll cook for you, we will spend the night in tree-top huts and oh so much more, :)
and i so much look out for poems...especially from the ones I love :)
love,
dev
oh how tender and aromatic, juicy and PERFECT, sweet, sweet Bird ;)
Devika--tree-top huts? Oooh...sounds like a cool idea--I'll bring the mosquito netting...
we need that even here where it's not tropical! You weave such wonderful fantasies to savor--
Your comment got eaten? Someone around here must be hungry!
And thank you for watching for my poems, it means a lot to me--
Lorraine--your comments, too are delightful and precious to me--you're such a dear friend!
Oh my, you said one of the musts for a stay in those huts :)
so when are you coming? :)
wishes,
devika
Devika--as soon as I get untangled from the wild vines in my present life! (They grow so fast, you know...)
i know, i know my bird :)
and I have my doubts of you getting free!! :))
Find some time in between all these my dear..thats all what we can do, i guess :)
love
devika
Nice! The sound and sense both.
Devika--Thanks, I hope you will be still there when I am old enough to travel to exotic places--(when I retire, that is), somehow that has always been my fantasy for later years--of course you will not be old yet then, my dear!
Paul--you have zeroed in on what I was trying for, as usual! And then who else but me would write a love poem to a fruit--but then such is my life...(smile)
Horoscopically my time should be over on the 42 day after my 68 birthday...now i'm 41...so you have 27 years to plan :))
thats horoscope...who knows when...yet, hope to be there, my dear :)
love,
devika
This "Papaya" is special to me.
Rapture over the beauty of nature!
Impressive!
Krystyna--Thanks so much for coming here "on your vacation"--I did not expect you here until the end of summer! Always a treat to get your comments! Enjoy the rest of the good weather...
Devika--No, I think it will be the 42nd YEAR after your 68th birthday...
Since when do horoscopes predict when we will leave this earth? This is new to me, tell me more!
Its not a joke my dear....Based on our birthcharts (what we call janmaraashi) every single event is predictable they say...Jyothishastram/Astrology is a long held tradition in India...i don't know to which ages it dates back
& Its about the occultive power and knowledge of the person...
there was a specialist near my mother's place who would predict things to the T...as for me and others in the family, most of the things he had said has turned to be true....including the date of my disease, marriage, etc etc
Normally they say they don't predict the day of death...mostly they say the year...because not all can take the date ....
but then these atrologists also save themselves by saying..."in the event of a cosmic casualty" :))
a very interesting field..but to be learned only from the masters...meaning books may not make you one...but may make for a good study :)
wishes,
devika
Devika--this is fascinating!
I do believe that astrology holds all manner of wisdom and I find it a source of guidance and inspiration--however, I wonder how it can be so exact--it's possible that the astrologers who are able to do such wonders might also have a psychic source of information...
Now you must tell me what "jyothi" means--(I'm guessing that "shastram" means "study" or "knowledge"?)
"psychic source of information"
yes they do have...that makes them masters...many people have bookish knowledge, and are not always correct with prediction...those with inborn occultive power predict too well,
Now you must tell me what "jyothi" means--(I'm guessing that "shastram" means "study" or "knowledge"?)
Jyothi means light, shastram is science, to be exact,
both are Sanskrit words in origin...and almost the same in most Indian dialects.
devika
Devika--So your name also means "light"--and "Devika"--are you named for a goddess?
ggghhhmmmmphhh!
I am quite in a devilish mood for some time now...hence the reaction, my bird
Devika...not any particular Goddess...we have three Goddess (Laksmi, Saraswati and Parvati) and a hell lot of incarnations...each with a certain name,
but Devika means 'little Goddess' as my father thought I was one....but in the years to come he had his doubts and reservations, i guess :)
