goldeneye
is it this cloud
inside my chest
that makes me think of you
or is it
that tiny black duck
there
with the small white patch
around its eye
bobbing alone
in an empty ocean
see, I am certain
that if that infinitesimal dark spot
in its center
disappeared
the sea
would rise up
like a torn blue blanket
and peel itself
off the earth
into the sky
that is,
from what I know
about love
inside my chest
that makes me think of you
or is it
that tiny black duck
there
with the small white patch
around its eye
bobbing alone
in an empty ocean
see, I am certain
that if that infinitesimal dark spot
in its center
disappeared
the sea
would rise up
like a torn blue blanket
and peel itself
off the earth
into the sky
that is,
from what I know
about love

The Goldeneye is a sweet little black and white duck that lives offshore in the winter, coming closer only in bad weather...sometimes seen in twos or threes, most often in large crowds--called "rafts".
"certain, that is
from what I know
about love"
I too am, my dear bird :)
Nice poem, as always packing things is small words....
In Kolkata, India they say they have a type of silk saree -- more than 6 m long, which could be packed into a match box (4x3 cm)
I am reminded of that when I read your poems, my dear :))
wishes,
devika
Devika--I just LOVE that image of the endlessly long saree in the tiny box! (I doubt you could wear it without underwear--?)
I somehow feel that if I use small words, my readers would not get bored and lose interest before they finish reading...! Of course, you are not included in that--you are so good to me always.
Oh my dear bird -- what a question..
How can one be without an underwear -- I cannot imagine!
And saree is tied to an underskirt -- long skirts we wear...for one to tie and pin the saree tight and two to care of any trasparency of the fabric...
There are ladies who have two underskirts...especially the slim ones...it helps them get a figure too :))
Your small verses --- I love them, my dear..as I love you :)
love,
dev
I can see the Goldeneye
Precious words...such a depiction of Love, all small things
i love te emotion you pack in your 'small' verses.
Devika--I wish we had clothing as romantic and lovely as the saree and all its accessories...and I was just teasing you about the underwear, but really, it is nice to learn about all these details, they are such mysteries to me!
How long does it take to dress in your traditional way? It is so graceful and becoming.
Echo--I'm sure you can see it, your inner eyes are so clear...love to see you here again!
Lorraine--eloquent and delicate comment as usual...thanks, and more thanks, can't say it too much!
Polona--you put your finger on what I am trying for...I appreciate your comment so much--
My dear,
some take up to hour-an hour or even more..
to me -- 5 to 7 minutes :)
I started wearing saree when I was 19 years..I love the dress :)
Infact in India -- women of different states wear saree in different style...
traditions, language, custom, food habits, dress et all differ for each state :)
I am sure you would look elegant and graceful in a Saree..sensuous too it is, men say :))
wishes,
devika
"the sea
would rise up
like a torn blue blanket
and peel itself
off the earth
into the sky" - I love these lines! You have such a way with words Firebird that gives immediate imagery. Excellent closure.
Devika--now you have me so curious about your daily life--do you wear the saree every day now? Or only for certain occasions...and how did you dress before age 18? My mind is full of wonderings...life is so full of unknown details!
Janice--your comment makes me very happy--I always appreciate your feedback, as you have a special understanding of how a poem is put together!
haha my dear bird, you now wonder me :)
These days -- since I work from home -- I don;t wear saree everyday. When I go out I so wear...But in the locality -- I wear churidaar...the North Indian dress with long kurta tops
--how did you dress before age 18? -- long skirts, midi, pants..all ofcourse with a top :))
and you?? i am also wondering --
love,
devika
Dear firebird,
foreclosing your kind permission I tranlsated this your poem I do really love into German and put it on my blog. Excuse me for this late asking and feel free to put the blame on me. Nevertheless I feel confident you won't!
Best wishes
Susanne
Here ist is:
Mein Herz,
hast du gewartet
auf den perfekten Winkel
des Sonnenlichts
den Schnee zu schmelzen
hast du ein Rotkehlchen
erwartet
oder einen Lavastrom
oder, großzügiger noch,
ein sich Dünnen
der Erde Haut
nur so
hofftest du auf Wärme
warst du gewillt
zur Tat
laß uns reden
Devika--Now I must research the clothing you are talking about! There are many women from India in New York City in native dress, so I am sure I have seen these styles...
You are right about what I wore at age 18--also I wore men's blue jeans, since they did not yet make women's jeans to fit!
Susanne--I am sure you meant to post this comment on "Dear Heart"--the previous post--but I am leaving it here, in case someone else will read it and find your blog...(the comment is also on that post, with a link to Susanne's blog.) And thanks, Susanne, for the honor!
i know -- even my sisters used to dress like boys :)
i wore jeans/pants only in Engineering college -- when it was compulsory on days we had lab: work...else I wore only skirts, saree :)
wishes,
devika
Devika--I am glad to see you are not too feverish to come and visit me--I hope you allow comments on your blog soon, so we can wish you a rapid recovery!
Pants were not allowed in High School, so when I got to college, it was a liberation to wear them to school. But heavy jeans are not very comfortable for me, so I rarely wear them now. I would wear skirts more often, but I do so much active work (gardening, etc.) that I would always have to be changing...
