to call an angel
I heard you were ready
idling your wings
at the angel stand
bright vortex
you are love revved up, panting,
as if straining for my word to cut you loose
like an arrow from a crossbow
I need your immensity
my friend
it is you
who can slice me, with one stroke
deeper into my darkness
than I can fly
light me
from inside my body
be my third hand, for now
the one whose fingers glow
with their own glory
be my heart waving
like a sunrise at midnight
spilling stars
into the sea
all this you can do
as if I were the one without fear
and love, for that is your name
when I search inside
to find your brightness has become my world
just the knowledge of your presence
shames me slightly
as if, when I picked up the phone
and summoned you
to my rescue
I had called myself
idling your wings
at the angel stand
bright vortex
you are love revved up, panting,
as if straining for my word to cut you loose
like an arrow from a crossbow
I need your immensity
my friend
it is you
who can slice me, with one stroke
deeper into my darkness
than I can fly
light me
from inside my body
be my third hand, for now
the one whose fingers glow
with their own glory
be my heart waving
like a sunrise at midnight
spilling stars
into the sea
all this you can do
as if I were the one without fear
and love, for that is your name
when I search inside
to find your brightness has become my world
just the knowledge of your presence
shames me slightly
as if, when I picked up the phone
and summoned you
to my rescue
I had called myself
