asteroid
space
is a wonderful place
for a rock
Lo! see me stretch out
my volcanic heart
till my craters
smile
whether you watch
or not
while
I ponder gravity
atmosphere, and rain
those oscillating oceans
that overwhelm the brain
slime
and such bizarrities
as finite time
Ha! I am too dry
to cry
I am rock
remembering when
there was fragrant flesh
surrounding my body
and I was the dense center
crouching
knowing somehow that I would live
and live, and outlive
the soft substance
melting, so fresh
peeling away
It was you, wasn't it
who loved apricots
and I
who discovered
space
a wonderful place
for a rock
is a wonderful place
for a rock
Lo! see me stretch out
my volcanic heart
till my craters
smile
whether you watch
or not
while
I ponder gravity
atmosphere, and rain
those oscillating oceans
that overwhelm the brain
slime
and such bizarrities
as finite time
Ha! I am too dry
to cry
I am rock
remembering when
there was fragrant flesh
surrounding my body
and I was the dense center
crouching
knowing somehow that I would live
and live, and outlive

I love this, my bird....I needn't say it again that I love your poetry,
but to place oneself at the core of the universe...to see things, know, feel, and yet not cry...
thats the poetic heart we talk about......not all poets live in that state...taking things too personally,
anyway, i seem drifting elsewhere....this was too good, my bird....it is more humane than the title "asteroid" speaks of :)
love,
devika
Enchantress you have spoken...I have to go see if I have your e-mail, I want to send you something that awed me as much as this poem...
Absolutely loved this...and the twist at the end with an ever so subtle touch of humour. Fantastic writing Firebird.
Devika--Wow, you really got into depths of meaning here...I am so glad you find it "humane"--it is reassuring to hear you say that--being a rock is a new experience for me, but a warm one even at these distances...
Lorraine--I so love being called "enchantress"! (That's also a new experience for me)
My e-mail is viv4evermore@yahoo.com --I thought it was somewhere on my profile page? or home page? You are encouraged to send e-mail anytime the mood strikes you...!
Janice--I'm really glad you liked the poem, always love your comments, you have so much insight!
One Nice Place
One Nice Moment
Love this poem,
thank you
Take care, dear Firebird!
Your photo is stunning and especially when enlarged! Rocks always appeal to the imagination. In Norway it was believed that trolls changed into rocks if they were caught by rays of sunshine. In Australia many rocks are actually secret places for the Aborigines. Thanks for your visit!
Your poem got me in a whirlpool...I'm still rambling through the universe! Very strong...and yet with a sensuous end!
Krystyna--thanks so much for visiting--it is always a nice moment when you are here!
Reader Wil--so kind of you to stop by--delighted to see you! You have the most fascinating tidbits of information!
Gabriela--Love your comment, what a vivid image! I am happy you came here, and even happier for your gracious message!
WOW!!!! "...see me stretch out my volcanic heart till my craters smile..." is brilliant!!! I love apricot jam, does that count?
Thanks,Pat-- that image somehow reminds me of the metaphors in your poetry, now that I think about it!
Apricot jam, that's a way for the apricot to outlive the stone, no?
(until you eat it, of course--then it goes into another dimension!)
