actually, it is the 100 mm macro lens that focuses really close but acts like a telephoto so you don't need to stick your nose close enough to scare them!
(It was really lucky timing, too!)

pink seems to be in vogue lately in the blogosphere, but this is a gorgeous butterfly.

i saw several monarchs just the ohter day, hiking in the woods. as always, i had forgot my camera!

Bird--Hi! Pink is actually a very rare color for coreopsis (usually yellow), and the varied coloring on this is unusual--
I'm hoping to catch a photo of a monarch, so I planted several butterfly bushes and other tempting flowers--I can't say I've ever seen more than one monarch on a hiking trip--you're lucky!
(and it's true, the best pictures happen when we forgot our camera!)

Great photo! You did a wonderful job on the focus, sometimes its tough since the butterfly doesn't hold still.
