Mandy--Thanks for visiting, and I appreciate your "awesome" comment-- actually, it is the 100 mm macro lens that focuses really close but acts like a telephoto so you don't need to stick your nose close enough to scare them! (It was really lucky timing, too!)
Bird--Hi! Pink is actually a very rare color for coreopsis (usually yellow), and the varied coloring on this is unusual-- I'm hoping to catch a photo of a monarch, so I planted several butterfly bushes and other tempting flowers--I can't say I've ever seen more than one monarch on a hiking trip--you're lucky! (and it's true, the best pictures happen when we forgot our camera!)

pink seems to be in vogue lately in the blogosphere, but this is a gorgeous butterfly.
i saw several monarchs just the ohter day, hiking in the woods. as always, i had forgot my camera!

Great photo! You did a wonderful job on the focus, sometimes its tough since the butterfly doesn't hold still.
